The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list has been published, showing 50 most generous donors in 2013. Last year, the contributors made a total of $7.7 billion, a 4% increase over 2012. However, the 2013 overall total was down from $10.4 billion in 2011.

Here is a look at 10 biggest donors and how they gave their cash in 2013.

1. Mark Zuckerberg

According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was the most generous American donor in the country in 2013. The 29-year-old creator of the social media giant and his wife Priscilla Chan donated close to $1 billion to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. They are the youngest donors to top the list as the median age of the philanthropists was 72.5. Last year, the couple donated 18 million Facebook shares, which were valued at $498.8 million, to the foundation. They also gave away $100 million to New Jersey Schools in 2010.

2. George Mitchell

2013’s second-biggest donation came from Texas energy tycoon George Mitchell, the founder of Mitchell Energy and Development. The former Forbes 400 member died at the age of 94 last July and left approximately $750 million to the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation. The charity, which was founded by George Mitchell and his wife in 1978, supports conservation and sustainability.

3. Philip Knight

Philip Knight and his wife Penelope Knight, who have been on the Philanthropy 50 four times in the past, donated $500 million to the Oregon Health & Science University Foundation last year. In 2008, the couple also gave $100 million to the University to back the Knight Cancer Institute. However, the gift came with a big challenge: the foundation must match the donation within two years, or lose it.

4. Michael Bloomberg

In 2013, Michael Bloomberg gave $452 million to education, public health, environment, arts and other causes. The billionaire with an estimated net worth of $ 31 billion served three consecutive terms as mayor of New York and now he plans to spend more time on his philanthropic efforts.

5. John and Laura Arnold

The fifth-biggest donation of 2013 came from John and Laura Arnold. The pair gave $235.8 million to the Laura and John Arnold Foundation and Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund.

6. Charles Johnson

Last year, Charles Johnson gave $250 million to Yale University and this is the largest gift in the university’s history. The majority shareholder of the San Francisco Giants baseball team graduated from Yale in 1954. He retired as chairman of the board of Franklin Resources in 2013 with $820 billion in assets under management.

7. Pierre and Pam Omidyar

Pierre Omidyar, who founded eBay, and his wife Pam Omidyar, who is chairwoman of HopeLab, were other big donors in 2013. The couple donated $225 million to Omidyar Network and Humanity United. They also gave their money to HopeLab and Ulupono Initiative, which supports groups focused on the environment, sustainable energy and local agriculture.

8. Irwin and Joan Jacobs

Irwin and Joan Jacobs, who are 80 and 81, respectively, donated $221.1 million last year. Their beneficiaries include The Jacobs Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute at Cornell NYC Tech, Jewish Community Foundation, Dunaway Foundation, San Diego Donor Advised Fund and San Diego Public Library Foundation. The couple also gave $105,000 to other charities in 2013.

9. Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki

Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki donated $187-million to Brin Wojcicki Foundation and $32 million to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. The Google co-founder and the 23andMe co-founder previously gave nearly $95-million to the foundation as well. The couple are reportedly living apart.

10. Jeffrey Carlton

Jeffrey Carlton died in 2012, leaving $212 million to Jeffrey Carlton Charitable Foundation. Four nonprofits, including Hoag Hospital Foundation, American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities, Principles Inc. and Paralyzed Veterans of America, will eventually receive about $53-million as he speculated before he passed away.
