Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti was born to a family of shepherds from the al-Begat tribe on April 28, 1937. He was born 8 miles (13km) from the town of Tikrit in Iraq. His name -- given by his mother Saddam, in Arabic, means "one who confronts". Saddam never knew his father -- Hussein Abid al-Majid, who disappeared six months before he was born.
