Evelyn Lauder, one of the co-creators of the pink ribbon as a symbol for awareness of breast cancer, has passed away from complications of non-genetic ovarian cancer. Evelyn Lauder, the former executive at the Estee Lauder cosmetic company, the wife of Leonard A. Lauder, the chairman emeritus of the company and the daughter-in-law of the company’s formidable matriarch, Estée Lauder, died on Saturday, November 12 at her home in Manhattan, New York City with her family by her side at the age of 75.
In 1992, Evelyn Lauder and the former Self editor-in-chief Alexandra Penney established the pink ribbon campaign in order to aware women of breast cancer. Although Evelyn Lauder knew her suffered from breast cancer in 1989, but she didn’t pay much attention to her own disease and focused on helping women fight against diseases in general.
By October 2008, Evelyn Lauder’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign was estimated to have raised $35 million towards research and distributed 80 million pink ribbons. Most recently, on 4th May 2011, the warm-hearted woman was captured to attend the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's 2011 Spring Ball at The Pierre Hotel in New York City with her husband Leonard Lauder, Chairman Emeritus of the Estee Lauder company.
