Former Husky and current U.S. women’s national team goalkeeper Hope Solo was announced Monday by ABC as a contestant of the new lineup for “Dancing with the Stars Season 13.” On her Twitter, Hope Solo confirmed the news and explained that the reason for her participation is she wants to raise awareness for women’s soccer. Joining Solo in the competition will be Ron Artest, Robert Kardashian, Kristin Cavallari, Chaz Bono, Nancy Grace, Carson Kressley, Ricki Lake, Chynna Phillips, David Arquette, J.R. Martinez, and Italian actress Elisabetta Canalis, better known as George Clooney’s ex-girlfriend.
The 30-year-old Hope Solo has become the biggest women’s soccer celebrity in America since Brandi Chastain’s famous sport-bra celebration during the 1999 World Cup. The goalkeeper's star has risen steadily over the past three years, scoring 109 goals at Richland High as a forward to become the second female goalkeeper ever to play 100 international matches. The newest football star reached the peak in June when Team USA was one part of the championship game of the Women’s World Cup 2011. The U.S. lost 3–1 in a penalty shootout to Japan, after twice taking the lead in an eventual 2–2 draw in the final. In fact, Solo led the U.S. to a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and her expectation is to be in goal again next year for the Games in London. The former University of Washington player also made news earlier this month when she revealed she was posing sexy pictures in ESPN Magazine’s “Body Issue.”
