Parts of Scotland are being battered by storm-force winds as the remnants of Hurricane Katia hit Britain with winds up to 132 kilometres per hour, the strongest in 15 years. Katia is the second major hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season, forming two weeks ago near the West African islands of Cape Verde. This hurricane has left thousands without power, caused damage to buildings and travel disruption around the UK. In County Durham, a driver died on Monday when a tree hit a car on the A688 at Dunhouse Quarry, between Staindrop and Barnard Castle. Elsewhere, high waves hit coastal areas causing most ferry services between Ireland and Britain cancelled their scheduled departures, fishing boats along the Atlantic coasts warned to head into port and more trees and branches fell on train tracks and roads. Several major road bridges have been closed to trucks.
