Lionel Messi was photographed arriving at the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or award ceremony at the Kongresshaus in Zurich on Monday night (January 13, 2014). The Argentine ace was joined by his wife Antonella Roccuzzo, who stunned in a gorgeous, floor-length sequin gown. The couple were flanked by Messi’s team-mates Xavi, Neymar and Dani Alves while entering the ceremony.
At this year’s gala, Lionel Messi was one of the shortlisted players for the 2013 Ballon d’Or along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Franck Ribery. However, the Barcelona star missed his chance at a fifth consecutive title as the best football player of the year as he was beaten out by the Real Madrid star.
“Cristiano had a great year and he won it on merit,” Lionel Messi said after finishing runner-up to Cristiano Ronaldo at the awards ceremony. "He had a great year, so there is nothing else to say. It was a good year for the three of us and that's why the three of us were there. Whoever won it would have been a worthy winner.”
Although the father of one failed to take home the trophy, he definitely won the award for his shiniest, reddest suit. Messi stood out at the event with his unique choice in attire as he opted for a bright red tuxedo by Ron Burgundy. It is not the first time the Argentinian maestro has donned a bold outfit to the Ballon d’Or ceremony. Last year, he sported a hideous polka-dot tuxedo and the year before he also outshined in a velvet jacket.
