Barcelona star Lionel Messi surpassed his teammate Xavi Hernandez and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid to win the UEFA Best Player in Europe award for the 2010-11 season.

He scored a total of 53 goals, helping Barcelona earn the Champions League and Spanish titles. A group of 53 journalists from UEFA's member nations had voted for the prestigious prize.

“I'd like to thank all the people that voted for me, and all my team-mates.” Lionel Messi said. “I keep all these awards at home and I still have some space for more. It's an honour to be so successful and to come up with the goods at the right time, thanks to my team-mates for helping me achieve this.”

In January 2011, the 23-year-old genius took home the FIFA's Ballon d'Or award for the world’s best player the second straight year.
