Michelle Obama and other first ladies at Stone Barns Center

in Society

On September 24th 2010, the U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama greeted First Ladies from various countries on the tour around the Stone Barns Center in northern New York. The spouses included Haitian First Lady Elisabeth Preval, Colombian First Lady Maria Clemencia Rodriguez De Santos, First Lady of Norway Ingrid Schulerud, First Lady of Cameroon Chantal Biya. Visiting the barn, other first ladies were treated to a seasonal lunch featuring bounty from the farm and the White House garden.

The Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, which is about 40 km to the north of New York City, serves as a farm and an educational center on sustainable farming. It shares the premises with one of the region’s most famed restaurants - Blue Hill at Stone Barns. This is also the place where first ladies enjoyed lunch with tomatoes, eggs, chickens and ratatouille. Most of them were collected from the White House garden and the farm. The visit is reported to be a part of the U.S. First Lady\'s healthy eating program.

On this occasion, Mrs. Obama emphasized the importance of educating children on foods they eat in daily lives. Accompanied with first ladies, students from two local schools joined this activity. Children helped to prepare the lunch by collecting the eggs and harvesting the herbs. In addition, three White House chefs came there to assist the restaurant\'s top chef and co-owner, Dan Barber for the lunch preparation.
