According to a report, a total of nine people drowned during a riverboat collision with a barge in the Moscow River on early Sunday July 31, only three weeks after a major cruise boat disaster on Volga River. This accident is said to be the second largest shipwreck in July 2011.
The collision occurred about 1 a.m. in a roughly 200-yard-wide bend in the river in southwest Moscow, near Luzhniki Stadium and not far from the Kremlin on Sunday. Members of investigators announced that the captain of the Moscow riverboat, who died in the accident, had three times of civil charges for violating operating rules and that in his vessel, with 16 passengers aboard, was overloaded while the maximum allowed number is 12. Nine unlucky victims left their life behind in which "An eighth body has been discovered. One more passenger is still missing." Interfax reported, quoting Emergencies Ministry spokeswoman Yelena Smirnykh. The captain of the barge helped save successfully some of the seven passengers, a Turkish citizen and a U.S. embassy employee.

Police, rescue workers and relatives of the victims stood on the river bank after the accident occurred. More than three weeks ago, a different boat accident in the Republic of Tatarstan caused 122 people
