Most Air-polluted Cities in America: Bakersfield is the dirtiest city

According to American Lung Association’s recent report 2011 State of Air, over half the country’s population live in areas where air pollution levels are often dangerous to breathe. It’s time to check the World Health Organization’s rankings and find out America’s most polluted cities.

San Diego

Most American consider San Diego as a Southern California paradise. But the city’s air is still polluted because of heavy traffic. An American Lung Association study of air quality across the United States says San Diego’s air is getting steadily cleaner. The nation’s eighth largest city got a grade of F because the public is still exposed to significant amounts of pollution, especially during the summer.

Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is the second-largest city in the US Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. During its industrial heyday, Pittsburgh was known as American Steel City. The whole city was an environmental disaster and the soot was visible on residents’ windows. Over the years, the city has changed from a city of steel workers to one of middle managers, so the air has improved. But air pollution is still major problem – thousands of children in the city suffer from asthma.
